Education

The Education Track of CS + Social Good Georgia Tech seeks to empower students by providing them with foundational computer science knowledge. We have developed a curriculum for K-12 students in the Atlanta community that exposes them to the problem solving process and various applications of computer science. We share this curriculum with elementary school students through Day of Code events and with middle school/high school students through EduCode, an after-school program with courses ranging from “Computer Science Foundations“ to “Object-Oriented Programming” and “Web Development.” Ultimately, we aim to provide all students access to CS education so that they may discover their passion.

Engagement

The Engagement track works to show students how they can utilize their technical skills to engage with social good work on campus and outside of campus. In the past, we have held research lunch & learns, social impact career fairs, panel events with local social entrepreneurs, and more. We are also working with professors at GT and people in the industry to share more on how to make ethical decisions in the workplace.

Inspiration

The inspiration team works bring conversations and thought to ethics and technology in the Georgia Tech community specifically. Our current initiatives are working closely with Georgia Tech professors in a variety of backgrounds to talk about the ways they incorporate ethics and social impact of technologies they discuss in class, and weekly discussions with students on various topics in ethics and technology (data privacy, 5G implications, and more!)

Work

We have partnered with different companies, startups and organizations to host events on Georgia Tech's campus, focused on technology and social good. We also go off campus to bring CS education to local schools.

Group of College Students Teaching Elementary Students Coding Principles
This was a flagship event where we invited local businesses and organzations as well as those from Georgia Tech to encourage students to become active in their community for social impact. We had over 50+ attendees and local startups and nonprofits like Kabbage, Black Girls Who Code, and Code for Atlanta in attendance.
Starting Spring 2020, we began hosting weekly ethics discussions for Georgia Tech students to attend. In these, we had a small group discussion over lunch on topics like digital surveillance, social media, and the future of artificial intelligence.
We have created the EduCode curriculum. EduCode aims to provide middle school and high school students with an interesting and informative computer science education that allows them to develop key coding skills and gain interest in the field of computer science.
Our programming is constantly growing and changing. We are currently looking into partnering with more orgs on campus, holding more technical workshops, and having more Day of Code events in local elementary and middle schools. We have also been looking into how to adapt the CS curriculum at Tech to incorporate more social impact content.
